We’re All In This Together: Matt Cohen, Passionate Nerds and Going Meta

Credit Lyssa Junek

One of the topics of conversation in our recent interview with Matt Cohen, who plays young John Winchester and the Archangel Michael on Supernatural, was the power of a television show to impact its viewers, sometimes in life-changing ways. Matt spoke thoughtfully about his experience on the groundbreaking show South of Nowhere, and also about the groundbreaking aspects of Supernatural – though the ground broken by last week’s SPN episode is more likely to result in side-splitting laughs.

It’s All About The Brothers – Richard Speight Jr on Gabriel, Nude Scenes and Sam’nDean Envy

Richard Plays Tour Guide: Headed to North Beach!

Creation’s Supernatural convention in San Francisco this month also gave us a chance to catch up with actor Richard Speight, Jr., aka Gabriel, aka The Trickster, aka one of our favorite people. Before we sat down to chat over a delicious lunch at Calzones, Richard gave us a tour of North Beach, a neighborhood we wouldn’t have discovered otherwise. Full of vintage music stores, mismatched architecture, insanely steep hills and the kind of historic sites you don’t always read about in the brochures (a strip joint where a piano apparently killed a performer, for example), North Beach is also where Richard directed and starred (as ‘the Rockstar’) in a film of the same name ten years ago. The film was a labor of love, and well worth adding to your Netflix cue or petitioning from Amazon. Read more

Todd Stashwick on being an actor and a fanboy and on the Twitter “global party”

Finally well rested from our trip to the Rising Con, we promptly headed to The Big Apple for the premiere of The Last Airbender last week – which, by the way, was incredible. We were blown away by the film (take that critics! True to the spirit of Nickelodeon’s original, visually stunning (and no, we don’t mean the 3D – the amazing fight scenes, the frozen vistas of Greenland, the bending of the elements effects, were all seamless). Novice Noah Ringer personified Aang, and the supporting cast was perfect, nothing overwrought and everyone striking just the right tone. Dev Patel was particularly adept at portraying Zuko’s ambivalence, part hurt little boy and part vengeful young man. Also, Bradley Cooper has nice hair and a dozen young women followed Jackson Rathbone around everywhere he went during the after party.

We also caught up with one of our favorite Supernatural guest stars last week, Todd Stashwick (Dracula from “Monster Movie”). We first met Todd at the Creation con in New Jersey a year ago, where we ended up having a few hours of conversation with him at some ridiculous hour of the morning – he was that entertaining.

Our Warm Winter Evening with Serge Ladouceur – Part 2

Both of our set visits in Vancouver have been strange, surreal experiences – albeit for very, very different reasons. (Have you seen The Wizard of Oz?? Yeah – something like that.) One thing that stayed constant through both times though, was the generosity of dozens of people who did not have to be generous or take time out of their crazy busy schedule to accommodate us of all people. Perhaps we’re too cynical, but it still amazes us.

Even now we’re a bit bewildered that Serge Ladouceur was kind enough to share his thoughts and give us behind the scenes insights on things like this gorgeous image among others.

See what else Serge has to say . . .

A Warm Winter Evening with Serge Ladouceur

In December of 2008, we made our first set visit to (finally!) interview Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. As soon as we arrived, though, we were welcomed with open arms by everyone in this tight-knit crew. And we do mean everyone – PA’s, lighting crew, the great people in the props and costume departments, Production Designer Jerry Wanek, and Serge Ladouceur, Director of Photography, came over to introduce themselves to us. During our twelve hours in fangirl heaven, we were quite overwhelmed with how wonderful everyone was. (And frankly a bit confused considering the strange, arduous and often embarrassing road we’d traveled to get to this point.)

As we waited for Jensen to film his last scene of the day (the scene in “Sex and Violence” in which Dean is driving down yet another dark stretch of road, alone, having a cell phone conversation with Sam) Serge came over to explain what we were about to see. Think Dean was really alone? Not even close. There were about fifteen people clustered around the Impala working lights and other effects. Think he was really driving down a lonely stretch of road? Wrong. The shot was filmed entirely on the sound stage. And the movement of the car? Well, that was the movement of one very strong man with a 2×4 wedged underneath the back bumper, pressing up and down on it to make it look as if it were moving. It was an amazing team effort and smacked of the “magic of Hollywood”. Afterwards, Serge asked if we had any questions.

Ummm . . . Yes!!!

The next time we were back in Vancouver in February of 2009, we sat down with Serge in our hotel bar. (Note to anyone who decides to conduct interviews in bars – bad idea!! We’ll explain why in the next part of the interview.) His remains one of our favorite interviews – the man is gracious and thoughtful and quite generous with his time – especially when you consider that they had been filming all day and we didn’t start the interview until about 10:00 pm. Two hours later we were still chatting. We thought we’d share a few excerpts from our interview with Serge here. As fans, we’re fascinated by how our favorite show gets made – so we thought some of you might be as well.

Pushing Boundaries with Chad Lindberg

Fangasm! is all about pushing boundaries and frequently stomping all over them in our pursuit of the “truth” about fandom. So who better to talk boundaries with than actor Chad Lindberg. He’s pushed quite a few of his own lately.

We sat down with Chad fresh on the heels of filming his comeback turn on Supernatural. He got the news that he’d be back on the show while finishing work on I Spit On Your Grave, and it caught him a bit off guard.

Jim Beaver Talks Jensen, Jared, and Subtext – And Pranks Back!

As promised, more from our trip to the Chicago Supernatural convention – in this case, some quality time with one of our favorite guys, Jim Beaver. Jim is one of the first actors we interviewed two years ago at the start of our Supernatural roadtrip, and damn, he really skewed our expectations. Not only did he invite us to come over and chat in his living room, but four hours later, we were still there! That conversation took place before Jim’s very first fan convention, so we spent some of the time trying to prepare him. (Yes, fans will line up for your autograph – little did he know!). Jim asked us as many questions about the fandom as we asked him, and we weren’t surprised that he ‘got it’ in so many ways. We also managed to get in a dare before we left, but honestly, we never expected Jim to be so creative in his tee shirt design. O—o

Catching Up With Richard Speight Jr. in Chicago

Capturing the essence of a fan convention is not easy. There are multiple conventions taking place at any given moment, and rarely will two people have the same experience. There’s the con the fans attend and the con the celebrities attend, and then there’s that strange crossover con where the two meet. Read more
