Catching Up With Cole: Behind the Scenes with Travis Aaron Wade on Supernatural

Travis Aaron Wade and his infectious smile

We caught up with Travis Aaron Wade shortly after he did his first convention panel at VegasCon – and right after he had appeared in another excellent episode of Supernatural. ‘The Things They Carried’ was a powerful and emotional episode, and it took the character of Cole and his relationship with the Winchesters in a new direction. At times the episode was hard to watch, thanks to writer Jenny Klein’s ability to make it truly a horror show and Wade and Ackles’ ability to bring intensity to the struggle Cole and Dean are engaged in. We couldn’t wait to ask Travis more about filming that episode and his experience with the Supernatural fandom.

Lynn: It was so nice to meet you in person – and you did a fabulous job at your first convention!

Travis: That’s so nice to hear, it feels great to give back. I teach people how to speak onstage, but I rarely ever do it myself, so it was interesting. But it felt natural, very natural.

Briana Buckmaster Talks Supernatural Shenanigans — with Kim, Misha, Jared and Jensen!

xxxx 10.08 kim

It’s a joyful day in Supernatural fandom – early renewal for Season 11, woohoo!! We thought we’d post an interview to celebrate the Best Show Ever and its amazing cast.

After watching ‘Hibbing 911’, I was dying to talk to Briana Buckmaster, the actress who brought Sheriff Donna to life so brilliantly. I finally got a chance to chat with her on the phone last week, after a few failed attempts, most of which involved me completely losing track of what day it was. Briana proved herself very understanding – if there’s anything a woman with a baby understands, it’s having a hectic life.

So Metatron Is A Fanboy: A Chat With Supernatural’s Curtis Armstrong

curtis crop

One of the best things that has come our way as a result of writing and publishing books on Supernatural is the opportunity to meet so many fascinating and creative people – both our fellow fans of the Show and the actors, writers and crew who bring Supernatural to life. At this year’s Chicago convention, we had a chance to chat with one of those fascinating people, Curtis Armstrong. We met up with Curtis at a steak house in Chicago the night before he was set to do his very first Supernatural convention. Gotta say, we were a little nervous to be sitting down with the likes of Metatron, but guess what? Curtis is about as far from diabolical as you can get. And a lot more adorable.

Joining the Family: Travis Aaron Wade on Acting, Giving Back and (of course) Supernatural

travis (2)

I’m always looking forward to a new episode of Supernatural (as anyone who’s ever read any of our books can attest), but I was especially excited about Girls Girls Girls after I had a chance to chat with episode guest star Travis Aaron Wade. We’ve been intrigued by the character he’s played in Season 10, the mysterious Cole. I love when Show veers far away from the black and white and paints Supernatural in shades of gray (no, not fifty…). In Season 10, Cole is given enough backstory to be an ambiguous character; we’re not entirely sure if he’s good or bad, or a complex mix of both. Which is probably what most casual observers would say about the Winchesters too, come to think of it. That only made me more eager to talk to the actor who portrays him.

Travis kept to our appointed interview time despite bumps and bruises from a motorcycle accident the night before.

[ETA Travis: Torn ligaments and a dislocated shoulder (ouch!). And a little bit woozy from the pain meds lol]

Apparently he has more than a little in common with the Winchesters when it comes to stamina.

Lauren Tom on Fandom, Cons and Playing a Kickass Female Character on Supernatural!

lauren t

We had a lovely chat at NJCon with Mama Tran herself, the adorable Lauren Tom. You already know how much we love Osric – well, his ‘mom’ is just as awesome!

Lauren was doing a drawing at the con to benefit the charity Home Boy Industries, which would give a lucky fan the chance to have breakfast with Lauren and Osric. Osric’s mom joined in the last one, much to the lucky fan’s surprise. We all know Supernatural is a family affair, and Lauren and Osric have extended the tradition, both onscreen and off.

Lauren: My mom is going to come to the drawing breakfast in Chicago, where I’m from originally. She really wants to meet Osric. I met his mother, so…

Lynn: Well, he’s her honorary grandson.

Welcome to the Family – A Chat with Supernatural’s Gil McKinney

gil 10

I had the pleasure of chatting with Gil McKinney recently – and was it ever a pleasure! Gil, who plays Henry Winchester (Sam and Dean’s grandfather) on Supernatural, is one of the newer additions to the conventions, but he’s already become an integral part of the experience, and part of the SPN Family. (In fact, at his very first convention, right after his singing knocked our socks off, Kathy and I looked at each other and said oh yes, he needs to stay!)

Gil started off by asking questions instead of answering, which is always the way we like it. He also gave an impromptu private piano concert in between photo shots. Which is definitely the way I’d like all our interviews to go.

Osric Chau on his Emotional Last Scene as Kevin – and the Perils of Wrestling with Jared

We were extremely excited to see Kevin mentioned on the S10 sneak peek promo with a big question mark, and to hear Bob Singer tease that maybe he’d be back – because we love both the character and the talented actor who plays him. We sat down to chat with Osric Chau over dinner at VanCon, and invited photographer Karen Cooke to join us and snap some photos (Karen’s beautiful photos are featured in Fan Phenomena: Supernatural too).

Richard Speight, Jr. – On Gabriel’s Return to Supernatural, Ad-Libbing with Misha Collins, and Lots of Cons!

richard s

It happens to be the birthday of one of our favorite people in the world – and not just in the Supernatural world – Richard Speight, Jr. Richard is one of the first people we interviewed for Fangasm Supernatural Fangirls. We’ve had some of our most insightful and intellectually stimulating talks with him, often at the end of a convention when we all want to process and relax with a beer. Richard wrote a chapter for our new book, Fan Phenomena: Supernatural, sharing his unique point of view on the Supernatural conventions which have become a big part of his life over the past eight years. He turned around karaoke to make it the awesome party it is now, and when he became the emcee for a con weekend, the energy level at cons went up – and stayed there.

[Richard Speight, Jr., in Fan Phenomena: Supernatural, on not being famous: “And yet for the past four years, somewhere between five and fifteen times a year, I make grown women shake and young girls squee (and maybe a couple of guys get sweaty palms). Why? Because I’m a regular guest at conventions for the CW show Supernatural. Am I one of the show’s stars? Nope. A strong supporting character? Not even close. I appeared in a measly four episodes, playing first The Trickster who (spoiler alert!) later revealed himself to be the Archangel Gabriel. Four, total. On a show that has clocked over a hundred episodes and counting. Yet according to the web, I’ve so far been a featured guest at thirty-three conventions. That’s an unbalanced ratio that leads to an obvious question – Why?”]

At the time Richard wrote that chapter, Gabriel had been gone from the Show for three years. That all changed in Season 9, when he (and Richard) returned to the Show for the episode “Meta Fiction.” What was it like, we wondered, to return to the Show after all this time?

Lynn: That was the first time you worked with Misha, right?

Supernatural Ghost Hunting with Chad Lindberg

vegasconipad 2014 538

We caught up recently with one of our favorite Supernatural guest actors, Chad Lindberg, who played fan favorite Ash in multiple seasons of Supernatural. As far as we know, Ash is still holding down the fort in Heaven, waiting for the Winchesters’ next visit or perhaps waiting for Cas to get things straightened up upstairs. We’re hoping we see more of him in SPN soon. It was our first time meeting his girlfriend Amanda Hall, and can we just say, she’s awesome?

Supernatural’s Kim Rhodes Gets Flustered by Jared and Jensen, Loves the SPNFamily, and Basically Wins the Internet

vegas and dccon 395

In honor of Kim Rhodes’ birthday today, we’re sharing a lovely chat we had with Kim over lunch at the recent Creation convention in Washington D.C., shortly after she had returned to Supernatural for the Robert Berens’ penned episode, “Alex Annie Alexis Anne.” Much like our previous chats with Kim, the conversation went from serious to silly and back again, and we left feeling inspired. Kim has a way of doing that, doesn’t she?

Before we asked Kim about her filming of the recent episode and were treated to some inside scoop on both her character and costars Jared and Jensen’s naughty antics, we asked about the fundraiser for her daughter’s school that Supernatural fans had helped with.
