For those of us who were in Austin for a con and concert the week before, Indy the very next weekend was a con we came to already tired – but it was also a smaller, surprisingly emotional, thoroughly entertaining one.
I had friends to help me in the vendor room at Indy, which is SO glorious – and means I was able to catch more panels than usual. Friday I got to enjoy some of Osric Chau’s panel – I missed him! As I walked in, he was telling a hilarious story about how he had to try to block both Jared and Jensen’s long legs in a scene because they were both poking him.
He wasn’t really complaining though. Like everyone I’ve talked to who worked on Supernatural, they all appreciated the playful atmosphere that Jared and Jensen created.
Osric: The first AD told me, we run a well oiled ship. We finish on time, and that’s because we schedule in playing around time. And that’s so smart!
He said he’ll always compare every set he’s on to the Supernatural one.
Osric: Supernatural is that show you don’t expect that changes your life.
Isn’t that the truth!
He also joking complained about how confusing it was having two tall guys with J names as leads.
Osric: I got there and was so confused! Like why did they hire two tall white guys with J names? I kept calling them each other’s names!
Lol
He was very happy to keep coming back.
Osric: They said I was gonna die at the end of one season and then I read the script and was like, I didn’t die!
His favorite stunt was one of his first scenes where Kevin has to run away from Sam.
Osric: Jared is really competitive and so am I. I used to be a sprinter…
They were all apparently shocked at how fast he could run!
Osric wrote a great chapter about his acting journey and being on Supernatural in Family Don’t End With Blood that I love. It was so nice to chat with him again!
Osric: The more I travel, the more I appreciate home. And this is home.
Friday emcee Jason Manns came out to introduce the next panelist, commenting on what Osric said.
Jason: If you try to get out, we’ll pull you right back in.
I also caught some of Jeffrey Vincent Parise’s panel.
Jeff: I grew up here. I Zillow’d my old house – things have changed!
Jeff said he’s just finished recording an EP of his poetry and drumming, along with guitar, with Billy Moran and Jason Manns.
Looking back on his audition for Supernatural, Jeff said that it was Asmodeus’ first scene, and he was impressed that the writers had painted a beautiful picture that flowed so well. Like everyone who guest starred on the show, he was grateful for the experience.
Jeff: I couldn’t have imagined the gift this character and this show gave me. Supernatural is embedded in our culture.
Truth.
We had both Osric and Gil McKinney back at this con – both wrote beautiful chapters in Family Don’t End With Blood. We got Gil and Matt Cohen together, which turned out to be so much fun. (Yes, Matt wrote a beautiful chapter too).
Here’s Matt re-enacting Gil’s kid stealing a muffin. As you do.
Then they acted out how it might go if Henry met John again, which ended with Gil as Henry saying to Matt as John, “My bad, son.”
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827076281701110203
Gil talked about playing Henry again on The Winchesters.
Gil: Jensen called and asked if I’d want to play Henry again. I said, let me think… YES!!!
They both shared their love of the show that brought us all together.
Matt: Supernatural is so special, it can’t be over.
That led to talk of the reboot, which led to Matt fanboying over the prospect of Jared with Jason Momoa length hair in the reboot. Which would look like this…
Matt talked about getting cast as John, who had of course already been played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He said the casting director took one look at him, help up a photo of JDM next to him, and said oh god, please be good!
Gil: I got cast and they said to shave the goatee I had, then looked at me and went oh shit, you look younger than the boys!
Lol
Matt: Not every job is like Supernatural, where everyone cares. Even in Season 15 still, when I went up to direct an episode.
Btw, if you haven’t seen Matt Cohen’s amazing short film Mama Bear, go check it out. He’s working on trying to make a feature version, which would star a lot of our favorite Supernatural actors!
Matt re-told the hilarious story of him destroying his finger in Austin the week before.
Gil helpfully tucked in Matt’s shirt as he turned around to re-enact it and said “you’re welcome”.
Lol
Matt did say that Richard, Jason and Adam brought him back some delicious BBQ from Terry Black’s since he never made it there. Good job, friends.
There was also a panel with Samantha Smith and Kim Rhodes (we missed Briana, who had to cancel).
Kim was asked about the iconic dinner table scene of Jody trying to get Sam and Dean to give the sex talk.
Kim: It took a long time to shoot the talking about sex scene. Jensen was making mashed potato mountains and Jared was offering other euphemisms for sex.
Can you just imagine??
Samantha talked about the other iconic scene in Lebanon where JDM got hit in the nuts.
Sam: They used the wrong kind of marble, so it didn’t crush but instead just shot out and hit Jeffrey!
She also said that sometimes filming Supernatural felt a little too real.
Sam: I’d be like, I have to run upstairs! And Jensen would be like, there is no upstairs!
Kim talked about her love for animals, including Marshall the kissing donkey.
Who kisses like this.
Kim’s favorite scene with Mary was at the funeral pyre talking about Sam and Dean, and communicating without even needing to look at each other.
Sam: My proudest mom moment was when Mary left and needed to figure herself out. Probably not your favorite, and I had to come to understand it too.
(Not my favorite…)
Friday night was a lovely dinner at the outdoor patio of the hotel restaurant with good friends – it was gorgeous weather and it was so nice that it was NOT 107 degrees!
On Saturday we got a panel with all four ladies – Kim, Samantha, Ruth Connell and Alaina Huffman.
What are their characters up to?
Ruth: I’m killing it down in Hell. I mean, they’re already dead but…
Alaina said that Supernatural was actually a very professional set in spite of (the shenanigans).
I can attest to that too from just the times that I was there and got to watch and witness what a well oiled machine it was. With laugh breaks of course.
Ruth: It was a very quiet set when Jensen was directing. He’s a great director.
Awww.
Sam: I was very proud I had my own machete. Of course Jared had to pick it up. And of course he cut his finger.
Ouch.
Ruth told a great story that reiterates how much fun the Supernatural set was.
Once she was saying something in Latin in rehearsal and Jensen, who was directing, was like, ‘can you not ACTUALLY summon a spirit now?’
They’ve all been doing this a long time.
Kim: I worry about the audience reaction when a new fan asks the prank question…
She talked about a few times there was something in the show that she didn’t think make sense. The show edited out a scene where Jody pushes back on Cas telling her not to go through the rift because Claire would be sad.
Ruth said she went through a lot to film a scene with a scared gerbil and then it got cut anyway.
Sam: And we never got to film Mary’s fight with Jody.
They did film that amazing scene with Mary fighting with Sam and Dean though.
Sam: It was such an emotional scene, Mary fighting with the boys, and then when I said, you’re not a child, Jensen added ‘I never was.’
Of course that was an Ackles ad lib. It killed me.
When Rob and the band came back onstage, Rob noted that Ruth loves gifts – and that it’s very stressful (for him)! Lol
Then it was time for the R2M panel – Richard, Rob and Matt.
Matt did his traditional leap off a chair, which came out looking like this. Rob and Stephen’s expressions tho!
Richard: Someone told me I was great last night at karaoke. (He wasn’t at karaoke). She thought I was Jeff Parise.
Lol
Rob told some sweet stories about Ruth and the baby – apparently they both had to learn Itsy Bitsy Spider. Awwww.
Once Ruth started laughing in the middle of a fight with her because her accent was just too cute.
That meant Richard and Rob both doing Ruth imitations – and Matt Cohen dying of laughter.
Richard is such a great storyteller. He told a hilarious story about a little birthday celebration they had for Misha, and Jensen misspoke and said “Foghat Leghorn” instead of “Foghorn Leghorn” and Richard lost it.
Jensen: Are you done??
I can hear it, can’t you?
What were their favorite 80s movies?
Matt: Rambo. (That makes sense if you’ve seen his awesome short film, Mama Bear).
Since Richard and Rob have been doing the SPN Then And Now podcast and watching all the early series episodes, Richard talked about what a beautiful episode “Heart” is.
Such amazing performances too from Jared and Jensen.
Richard: Supernatural really rolled the dice and took risks and I admire that. They had two lead actors who could do it all, lightning in a bottle.
So true.
A fan asked Rob what it was like being on The Boys and did he feel “exposed”?
Rob: I love the show…lots of firsts for me…
Lol
He said when he first saw the prosthetic butt, he was like, THAT’S what my butt looks like??
If you haven’t seen it, check out Matt’s conversation with Rob all about his role on The Boys on Matt’s YouTube channel – it’s fascinating!
Saturday was Misha Collins day of course – fresh from the DNC Convention!
It was Misha’s birthday weekend too – a big one, number 5-0!
Misha said he got a special present from his daughter – a big shiny mud ball.
He also said he had “Shake It Off” stuck in his head because of the song his family made up to it for his birthday, which was hilarious.
Creation: Starts playing Shake It Off
Misha was feeling frisky the entire panel.
Misha: My grandmother and mother are from Indianapolis. It’s my homeland. It’s why I have a thick…. Accent…
Lol
A fan stepped up to the mic and asked him, why are you so terrifying?
Which of course meant he had to go say hi up close.
Misha: Your eyes have moved from terrified to hatred.
Someone asked what other characters he’d like to play.
Misha: It might be fun to play Dean, but I’m afraid my knees would get sore.
Dean has bowlegs, people!
There is always controversy about the way Jared, Jensen and Misha teased each other and joked around on set, but Misha fondly recalled the time they all dressed up as each other.
Misha: (fondly) We spent a lot of time mocking each other.
Misha: We were just laughing a lot. We started shooting on digital in Season 5 so it didn’t cost us much, just the overtime. My god, we did not care. It was great. Sometimes I would have sore abs from laughing.
He also said when people told him he did such a good job staying serious as Cas that it was take 15 and they’d made Jared and Jensen leave the set!
(After they did that, he had to film his coverage with Robin from Props standing on a box as Sam lol)
He demonstrated:
He also told the story of the time he and Jared filmed a scene of Sam and Cas and the outtakes were so funny that the cameraman had the camera bouncing up and down.
He also said he would have liked to play human Cas more.
Misha always tells stories about his kids – he retold one I’d heard and enjoyed before, about the elaborate story he made up when his kids were little about pirate treasure and when they found “it”, West wanted to give it to the homeless.
Oops. And aww.
Misha said that they were all competitive in the beginning.
Misha: In the beginning there was talk of I have the most days of work – then that became haha, I’ve got less!
And in case anyone needs to hear it (because fandom always needs to hear it)…
Misha: We’re all supportive of each other.
Sometimes that translated into their own unique brand of … fun?
Misha: Jared and Jensen and I used to have wrestling matches all the time. We’d show up Monday morning and Jared would have rug burn on his face and I’d be unable to operate my elbow. It was like like a normal totally in line thing. Also something that you don’t do after 50.
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827401084991893524
Boys.
He made it clear that they all knew when to be serious though, especially to support each other as professionals.
Misha: We were dialed in with each other enough to know when to give each other the space we needed to show up.
As he’s said before, his last scene with Cas was extra emotional because it was also his last scene and his goodbye to the cast and crew.
Rob Hayter took special care of him in that last scene, even walking him back onto set when they were ready for him.
Misha: Jared, Jensen and I knew our characters so well we could just morph into them.
They were so attached to them, that they were genuinely emotional about the show ending.
Misha: Jensen told us his dream of when Dean lost Sam so he didn’t need the Impala anymore, and Jared and I started crying.
Me too, when I heard it. I love that they were so attached to these characters – that they felt so real to them too.
Saturday was dinner with friends at the lovely outdoor patio once again.
And then Saturday Night Special time with Louden Swain and friends! This concert turned out to be special – it was all from one of my favorite Swain CD’s, Sky Alive.
That means I got to hear a lot of my favorites, including Ruth Connell joining Rob to sing “Cool If I Come Over”, which she hasn’t done in ages. So wonderful to have her back at SNS! Also, they are TOO adorable together.
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827519869572542814
Another treat was having Gil McKinney back at SNS – I’ve missed his beautiful voice!
Jeff Parise joined in the fun playing bongos for a few of the numbers too.
Kim Rhodes also sang a Swain song – she has been a big fan from the start too, so that was a treat.
And Richard Speight, Jr. joined the band for the song Rob wrote about him, Trigger Finger!
Rob and Rich took a moment out from singing to re-tell the hilarious story of the time they found themselves in a real life ‘there was only one bed’ trope.
I was absolutely thrilled that they sang “Angela”, which Rob wrote after his stroke. It’s so beautiful, much like the chapter he wrote in Family Don’t End With Blood, which takes you moment by moment through that experience. Forever so happy he’s okay and with us.
The audience helds light up for Amazing, another emotional song.
What a great show!
And then it was Sunday – J2 day!
Jared and Jensen took the stage and immediately started laughing as Jared’s mic kept slipping down. Look how amused Jensen is lol.
We found out that both their Impalas were originally blue, which I did not know.
Apparently Kripke was like, paint it black!
They did some reminiscing like Misha did, always my favorite part of any panel.
Jensen: Sera was gonna take over and we knew Sera and we all loved her, she did a great job with what she was given. But it was an odd time because Swan Song was effectively supposed to be the end of the show.
Jared: That was Kripke’s ending.
Jensen: Kripke likes five seasons. With The Boys, this is it, Season 5.
Jared: Do you remember that 100th episode party?
Jensen: (laughing) Yeah.
Jared: I’ll get back to Swan Song, but we had a 100th episode party and it was like a big deal in linear television. And the then head of the CW, lovely lady… I’ll go with this story. They show like a sizzle reel of what we’ve done and they have this whole venue with open bar and food. She gets up and says it’s an honor to have Supernatural on the CW and you’ve been here before we started – it was very lovely – then she says without further ado, I’d like to welcome the stars of the show… ummm (pulls out notes in her pocket)… Jen…Jen…Jensen Ekkles… and Jared.. Jared… and Jared.
Jensen: lol
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827724826867302908
They also reminisced about the time the bottle that was supposed to be a breakaway wouldn’t break. Poor Jake Abel.
Jensen: So Misha threw it at Jake and it wouldn’t break, so basically he was just chucking an unbreakable bottle at a human body.
Jared: And Jake is like OWWWW.
Jensen: It wouldn’t break. And so Steve Boyum, who’s like this old weathered stuntman turned director, he’s all frustrated and he’s like damn it Misha, throw the bottle harder! And Jake’s like, what? So Steve is like throw it me then, chuck it hard! And Misha throws it and it doesn’t break and Steve’s like OWWW, can I get a breakaway bottle please?
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827725671730122814
They have SO much fun remembering these things and every time I feel like we are so privileged to sit there and listen to them essentially reminisce together about all the fun they had and how special it was.
They also talked about how not fun it was to have fake wounds melting onto your face. Ewww.
What were some special moments they remember?
Jensen: Jared and I sitting on the roof of the trailer after Swan Song, not knowing if we were coming back.
Jensen: We climbed up there to watch the sun set, because we didn’t know if we were gonna come back or this was it. So literally we climbed up on the trailer, of course the Teamsters are like get down, oh great, they’re up on the trailer, drinking, this is not gonna be good.
Jared: And Jensen still had his eye patch, so he’s like hey man, I know this might be the last episode, I really have enjoyed our time together (reaches out for Jared but can’t see him lol)
Jensen: Come closer!
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827726459210694873
Audience: Awwww.
Another special moment was filming Baby.
Jared: Filming Baby was like Jensen and I being Sam and Dean.
No wonder they loved it – and we did too.
I can’t remember why Jared was talking about wanting to be Jonathan Taylor Thomas (and JTT) but Jensen was like oh my…
Most of the time, the two of them ganged up on other people as far as “pranks”, but there were some times they got each other.
Jensen (describing shooting a scene with Jim Beaver and Jared): … so the camera would completely obscure my line of sight to Jared. Which is fine, we’ve had to act with tennis balls before, so … But I’m talking to Jim and I turned to look at Jared and the camera has obscured my view, but there was this little hole between the top of the camera and the body, and I just see Jared go (drops slowly down – which Jared does in complete sync with him). Like so serious, just his eyes and I’m like oh good – I lost it. And then take two, same thing. Take three, same thing. Finally I just got used to it! There were those moments that were constantly occurring while filming. It kept it really fun on set. It kept us all laughing, kept the crew in a good mood. It was a morale boost to constantly mess with each other and have a good time, and it made the long days that much sweeter.
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827730995564408950
That dynamic was so much of what kept them going for 15 years, and I’m so grateful.
They thanked the fans and each other, as always – the gold panels go far too quickly!
After a great gold panel, there were lots of photo ops and meet and greets for many people, and also an R2 panel, Rob and Rich.
Rich: Years ago, at a very early Supernatural convention, someone asked me if I liked “slash fiction”. I said, I didn’t know Slash wrote fiction!
I cracked up when he said this because I was there, and we chatted with Richard about it afterwards and filled in some of the blanks. In fact, I think that’s in a chapter of ‘Fangasm Supernatural Fangirls’. This is one of those times when I so wish I could call Kathy (my co-author of that book and several others and my partner in crime here for many years) and say omg, remember when? I always think it for a split second, and then realize she’s not here anymore. Loss is so weird like that.
Anyway.
Rob: I love when people say oh I hate you and I’m like, on the show? And they’re like, you were on the show?
(Noooooooooooo Rob, I have never met a single person who doesn’t love you!)
Rob: Back in 2005 (when Supernatural started), every network had a supernatural show. I told Jared I was on Threshhold and he was like, what??
Someone asked about their favorite pick up lines.
Rich: No one has ever picked me up in my life!
Of course Rob’s recent role on The Boys came up, and Rich of course had a lot to joke about. He also then stopped to get serious, noting how many versions of the character Rob had to portray.
Rich: Rob actually did a great job with that character.
He also reminisced about the first scene he shot in Supernatural.
Rich: It’s me sitting in the auditorium reacting to Jensen getting beat up by women in their underwear.
Supernatural was such a multi-faceted show…
Rob’s very first TV role got cut, but he loved his regional theater experience.
Favorite thing about being God?
Rob: In real life I’d never be able to fight Jared and Jensen and win!
Jake Abel was next up.
Jake: This makes me the opening act for Jared and Jensen – too much pressure!
He said that he too gave a movie he was in permission to show his bare ass.
Jake: And they didn’t! I was kinda offended.
He also talked about his experience working with Stephanie Meyer and narrating a Twilight audio book.
Jake: I narrated a Twilight audio book, and it was like 12 hours long. It was the perfect Covid gig!
He said his three year old son was at the Austin con and now has a bunch of Louden Swain swag. Good taste!
Fan: Hermes or John Winchester as a dad?
Jake: At least I got flying shoes from Hermes!
What would be different if Dean had saved Adam instead of Sam?
Jake: I’d make a lot more money!
He thought about it and also answered seriously, saying that was the right call though.
Jake also told the amusing story I’ve heard before about how his costar and he on Percy Jackson were harnessed together back to front for quite a while.
Jake: Between takes we were just two dudes harnessed together…spooning…
And then Jared and Jensen, as per tradition, leapt onstage!
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827803220103868915
They also let Rich and Rob know that because they were busy onstage, they’d missed a group photo of Creation staff and actors – oops. (Someone’s photo shop skills later rectified that lol)
Someone asked about real life haunted places they’d like to visit.
Jared: I’d like to go to the Stanley Hotel. I love that kinda thing when real life lore crosses over.
(Everyone: and we love it when you say ‘lore’ and sound just like Sam Winchester)
Then Jared turned to Jensen for his response, using a nickname he’s had for him for a long time.
Jared: Shack?
Also just look at these two having so much fun – is it any wonder I say that J2 panels are like pure serotonin? I think they’re very lucky too (as are we), because they clearly love to get together and reminisce about all those years they spent on Supernatural and all the fun they had. What a gift for us and for them that they can still do that so often!
Jared: I had a dream for when Supernatural comes back.
Jared: It’ll be like Jack or Cas is like, we need you to do something. I look to Dean and he’s like, nope, I’m gonna kill every vampire I find.
Jensen: Every clown faced vampire I see!
Sounds good to me! Also, I love their constant character bleed that still happens after four years, when Jared says “I look to Dean”.
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827805508117352503
In reference to the finale, Jensen was clear that he’s good with how Dean died and what the ending was.
Jensen: Dean died doing what he loved.
Which is how he always wanted to go out.
So, once again, were they happy with the way Supernatural ended? (Everyone and their brother should know this by now, they’ve all answered it so many times – but I do love hearing it!) And how do they feel about their subsequent roles?
Jared: As much as you can be happy after 15 years. I was 22, a little dude who didn’t know what was going on when the show started. I was 38, husband and father of three when the show ended. How can you really end? And I don’t think anyone in here – I certainly don’t like to think of it as an ending – it’s a see ya later, we’re gonna take a break. So yes, I’m happy with the way Supernatural ended – or paused.
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827808570810712391
Jensen: It took me a while to get there, but ultimately I was happy with how the show came to an end and very very proud of the work that we put into that and very happy and proud of the way it turned out. I am enjoying my current roles that I’m playing quite a bit – Soldier Boy is a lot of fun – and it doesn’t begin and end with the role itself, it’s the totality of the experience you have when you’re on set. So my family up on The Boys, they’re the best, an incredible cast and crew, top to bottom. Obviously it’s an Eric Kripke world so it’s something I’m familiar with. He really knows how to put the right people in the right positions to make wonderful things.
I’ll say!
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827809163872702804
Jared: It is everything about a show, top to bottom. And on The Boys, I love Jensen’s bottom!
(You and everyone, Jared…)
Jensen: blushes adorably
Jared give him a pat of reassurance.
What would they be if they weren’t actors?
Jared: I’d like to be a teacher. Or a wildlife photographer.
(He’d be a great teacher, just saying).
Jensen: If not this, I’d be a stay at home dad.
Jared: I’d be his neighbor asking him to watch my kids.
Lol
Did they stop smiling at all during this panel? I don’t know.
What new projects are happening for both of them? They both have projects in development, but in this business, that can mean a lot of things.
Jared: I think Ackles has touched on this before. It’s a long runway to take off for one of these projects. You can go – and he and I have both done pilots that didn’t go anywhere or even shows that were several episodes and never made it to the screen – so it takes a long time.
Jensen nodded agreement.
Jared: So here’s the serious answer. The way I approach acting or story telling in general is it’s either hell yes or a no. So I either give everything I have to give to it, or the answer is I’ve got 3 kids and a wife and dogs and chickens and goats…
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827807749054275933
Jensen said he also has something coming up that his production company has sold. (We now know that’s the One Tree Hill reboot that Chaos Machine is producing!)
I kinda love that they’re both in a position at this point in their careers to be so thoughtful about what they do, and are both prioritizing story telling itself, whether they’re producing or developing or acting. It has been an absolute privilege to follow and support them both for 17 years now and watch that development.
Anyway (wow, this is turning into an emotional blog – I miss my Show).
Jensen said that he had to fight really hard to get the role of Soldier Boy on ‘The Boys’.
Jensen: But for Tracker I just called my buddy to come up and splash the ratings!
(Jensen had said that phrase to me earlier in the day, joking around, but I’d replied that it was actually very true – so I laughed when he said it again in the panel. But it is very true, for both of their guest roles!)
Someone asked about their other characters showing up to help the Winchesters, what that would be like. Jared and Jensen had a lot of fun just thinking about Soldier Boy and Cordell Walker trying to help the Winchester brothers out.
They got to do one of their very favorite things – re-enact something funny that happened while they were filming Supernatural.
Jensen (demonstrating on Jared how they were shooting and he could see Jared’s shoulder): His shoulder, right? So he turned around but we still got that little piece of shoulder. So I’m now doing the scene to the back of his stupid head! (They’re both laughing at this point). And this guy, he’s like legitimately trying not to laugh so we can get through the scene.
Jared: I was!
Jensen: And now I’m getting this dialogue, it’s really serious, and then I just see this (turns around and lets his shoulders bounce up and down as Jared bends over laughing). And I’m like, his shoulder’s laughing at me!
Jensen: I think it’s in the blooper reel somewhere.
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827813846414680267
They talked a lot about why the Supernatural set was so much fun, with Jared telling a story that still clearly amuses him.
Jared: We were shooting in downtown Vancouver
Jensen: And I was telling you what we were dealing with.
Jared: Yeah, and so Dean and Sam are talking in an alley, right near the Sutton Place Hotel where we were living at the time. And he’s like (Dean voice) Sammy, I found some skin, I think it’s a shhhshhhter. And Robert Duncan McNeil, who was directing, was like Jensen, slow down a little bit, we’re having trouble making out the word shapeshifter when you say your line. (Jared gets up to demonstrate). So action – Sammy, so I think .. shhshhter. So RDM is like hey great but it’s still difficult to understand what you’re saying. And Jensen’s like okay I got ya. So take 3, we run out – Sammy, I think I know what we’re dealing with, it’s a – giant pause – Shape. Shifter.
Jensen: shrugs
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827814180033872190
Lol
The most unusual question was what are their wives’ celebrity crushes, which made them ponder. Jensen finally said Danneel thinks David Spade is adorable.
Jensen: I’m like, what kind of guys are you into??
She apparently still has a mug with his face on it.
They did get serious again though – which ended up making me all emotional. Someone asked them about their nicknames for each other.
Jensen: I’ll start with Jared. For me, and that’s J-rod, J-R-O-D. I don’t even know what the origin of that is, it’s just, you know, you come up with different ways to say people’s names, and come up with nicknames. You’re in my phone as J-rod.
Jared: And he’s Jack on my phone. I call him Jack or Shack and J-Ackles.
Jensen: J-Ackles yeah.
Jared: Or Jack or Shackles
Jensen: Yeah Jackles, Shackles, those are commonly thrown out terms now for me and then J-rod. And then everyone on set, they’re like okay we need J-rod to set. But I think my most fondest, is that the right words?
Jared: Yep
Jensen: My most fondest nickname that he and I have ever gotten is “the boys”. We were always referred to as the boys on set by the entire crew because when we started, we were kinda boys.
Everyone: Awwwww
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1827816537690116112
I’ve been on set and heard them call each other those nicknames and heard the directors and crew use them also. Every single time we were there, over the span of a decade, everyone on set called them “the boys.” Warms my heart.
Favorite brotherly bonding moment?
Jensen: It was a Very Supernatural Christmas. The scene with the brothers in the motel room at the end where Sam brings Dean a drink, I think it’s eggnog. And it was just a really kinda touching little scene, Bob Singer was directing, he pans out and through the window snow is falling, so it was a really nice moment in the show.
Jensen: And Sam walks over and brings Dean a drink, and we do a little clink – and I take a sip – and it was just straight whisky.
Jared (winking): I don’t know what happened!
Jensen: Jared decided to heavy hand pour whisky in Dean’s drink, which Jensen had to ingest.

(If I’m remembering correctly, they used that take too)
Jared shared one too.
Jared: We were putting mattresses against the wall, I think it was Gordon, so he can’t smell me or something. And I’m saying I just want you to be my brother kinda thing. We had already had a million moments in the 30 episodes we’d done together, but that felt like you got your next belt, like in jujitsu, it was like oh, did we just become black belts? (Jensen grins) This is friggen’ cool.
Jared: That sticks out and Sacrifice sticks out when they’re at Death’s door and they edify each other and build each other up, character wise. There are a lot of them, on and off camera.

Jensen: One of these days we’ll go back, relive all those moments, figure it out.
Me: Yes please!!!
All too soon it was time for the last question – and a different version of the song with Rob on drums
Jared and Jensen gave each other props, a fist bump, and pulled each other into a side hug.
They thanked the fans, as they always do.
And that was the end of Indy con 2024!
My friend Laurena and I packed up the vendor table and hit the road in her car, taking a road trip to her house in Chicago. We felt very Sam and Dean.
Side note if you’re planning an upcoming con: Many people unfortunately got Covid in Austin, including about 50% of my friends, so I was testing repeatedly at this con. I had also masked the whole time, so luckily I stayed healthy!
