Supernatural Brings the Heat to Austin 2024!

It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks for me, and for a lot of the SPN fandom – two back to back conventions plus a Radio Company concert, plus Jared and Jensen heading off to film on new shows and Misha jumping fully into the political sphere. It’s been fun, exciting, inspiring – and exhausting!

I was in Austin a few months ago to give a talk on fandom at a conference, and it was super hot then. Or so I thought. When I got off the plane this time, I realized I hadn’t actually known what super hot means. Most of the time we were there for the con, it was over 100. And that wasn’t the heat index; that was the temperature. Ooof.

Still, there’s always a thrill being in Texas, the state the boys call home (even when they’re not currently living there full time).

The con hotel had an amazing rooftop pool that you could wade right into and lounge halfway IN the pool. I spent time hanging out with friends at night in the poolside cabanas, and had a nice lunch with other friends at the rooftop outdoor restaurant. Night was definitely the only comfy time to be outside.

I also got to do a little bit of shopping on South Congress and have a delicious lunch at Magnolia Café with good friends, so I felt like I at least got to do a little bit of Austin while I was there.

I love the city, just not the 100 plus temperature!

So, the con! (I’ve included some of my tweets with short video clips in them if you want to click and watch those too).

I caught some of Adam Rose and Matt Cohen’s panel on Friday, just in time to hear Matt do a hilarious retelling of the time some of the cast went out for BBQ and Matt missed it because he slammed his finger in a door (or maybe Adam shut the door, but at any rate, OUCH).

Matt: Now I have a piece of the blue cardigan on my finger!

Apparently the folks at the restaurant weren’t all that impressed by Supernatural actors, but blue cardigan guy from TikTok? Oh hell yes!

Not everyone knows him though. Adam said he worked with the Jonas Brothers.

Adam: I don’t think Nick had any idea who this bearded guy putting on a wig was…

How did it all start?

Adam said he happened to have the blue cardigan on for his first video that went viral, then thought he’d better keep wearing it so they know it’s the same guy.

The two were hilarious together.

Matt: Got any raisins?

Adam: On me? No….

Matt: Wanna date?

lol

On a more serious note, they gave some relationship advice.

Adam: Communication.

Matt: Touch your partner, not your phone.

I also caught some of Kim Rhodes and Briana Buckmaster’s panel. Briana (and me) admired Kim’s stabby earrings (which were big knives!). Aren’t they awesome?

Someone was asking people if cereal was soup.

Briana: You know what else is soup? A bath!

Kim: Someone is bringing us ice cream tomorrow.

Briana: They are???!

If you’ve ever been to a Kim and Briana panel, this won’t surprise you:

Kim: Bread baskets and orgasms, that should be the name of our band.

Briana: Yeah, everyone would come…

Lol

As a person from a family who are all neurodiverse in some way, I love what Kim has to say about her own family’s experience.

Kim: Seeming normal is more about others’ experience of you.

So true.

Briana told the story of that donut scene in her first episode of Supernatural. Director Phil Sgriccia told the boys that she was a professional comic, which totally set her up for them to try to break her in the donut eating scene.

Friday night was fun of all kinds. Some fans joined Gen Padalecki at the local Barnes & Noble for Casey McQuiston’s book signing for “The Pairing” – with surprise guest Jared!

Photo: Nerds & Beyond

Also on Friday night, Jensen Ackles and Steve Carlson (ie Radio Company) did a ‘behind the music’ panel at the con hotel complete with delicious BBQ. I was lucky enough to go to that one – they answered lots of questions about the band and their music.

Jensen: I get a lot of questions about Radio Company and whoever I’m with – usually Jared – can’t really weigh in, only Steve and I can. So here we are!

Someone asked him about not living in Austin anymore and Jensen protested that he was there all the time, going back and forth a lot and had been there a few weeks ago and a few weeks before that too. Someone also asked about collaborating with Kaleo and apparently lead singer JJ (who’s a good friend of both Jensen and Jared) would be all for it.

The funniest part of the evening was when Steve referred to Jensen being “off doing his…acting stuff…” and Jensen was like, my ACTING STUFF?? lol

As a special treat, we got to witness them workshop a new song that I absolutely loved. It was written about how you can feel at home even when you’re on the road, about their own experience – but it also had such a Supernatural vibe to it. Home even on the road? That’s so Sam and Dean.

Also the BBQ was delicious. And then there was karaoke, which featured lots of actors and lots of friends and was 100% fun!

Saturday was Misha Collins panel of course – he kicked it off with a big hug for Rob Benedict.

Awww.

Misha was about to turn 50 years old.

Misha: Richard Speight turned fifty first, and we all got together and bought him a really nice watch. Now I’m turning fifty but…

Misha: I’m starting to feel like a grown up, but am still pretty childish.

(Not that that’s a bad thing!)

Then there was that time Rob Benedict ended up buying a really expensive watch…

Misha: Rob thought, Jensen’s gonna buy me a watch? Amazing! So they went in the Rolex store. Then Jensen was like, why don’t you try some on and Rob’s trying on watch after watch. Jensen was like, that one there looks really good, Rob. Rob was like yeah, that looks really good. Jensen was like, that’s the one, Robbie! And then he pulled out his phone and walked out of the store…

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1824868198853808224

Misha is such a good storyteller lol.

Misha said he was excited to be there because it’s his first time in Austin, which people immediately jumped online to say that no it isn’t, but I was just posting what he said! Anyway, he was excited to be there.

Someone asked what show he thought had a really coherent story line with a clear vision of where it was going.

Misha: Not Supernatural! Gotham Knights did a good job.

He then went on to say that Kripke had a vision of the first five seasons and the story was very tight through then.

(The first five seasons under Kripke, I would agree, had an amazingly coherent story line and a clear vision – later seasons were more variable, but still, the show managed to hang together for 15 freaking years, no mean feat!)

Pet peeves about Sam and Dean?

Misha: They never let Cas drive the Impala. Also Sam farts a lot and it actually changes the viscosity of the air…

He thought a bit more.

Misha: Also Cas had to do all the cleaning. In all fairness, he was up all night, but what did he get? To watch them sleep??

Lol

Misha always has stories about his kids; this time about all those times your kid unfortunately beats you at something. Apparently West is very good at chess.

What would Cas celebrate?

Fan: The pizza man?

Misha: That was a big day for him, considering his true form… I mean, the shadow IT would have cast…

Fan: Not what I expected you to say…

He also re-told the story about the last day of filming for him.

It was a very emotional day, then they got on a plane to come to a convention and it nearly went down when an engine exploded!

Misha said that he’d had a few challenging years after the show ended and he got divorced, but he’s grateful.

Misha: I’m grateful for that challenging time in my life because that’s when you grow the most.

He’s thought about doing a podcast as a way of talking with interesting people, something he very much enjoys.

Back to Cas…

Misha: I would have liked to do a better job on some of the iterations of Cas. And see his true form…and that appendage…

Lol

He was surprised to hear from a fan that Rowena and Gabriel had a fling on the show.

Misha: Wait, Rowena got it on with Gabriel? That must have been designed to make Rob Benedict crazy!

Someone asked what power he’d like his character to have if he was on The Boys?

Misha: Well, it’s been usurped, it would’ve been eating my own ass. Repeatedly.

(Poor Rob will never ever live that scene down).

On a more serious note, the political film that he’s been working on is almost done.

The panel ended with us all singing happy birthday to Misha – and a cake!

And then Misha joined everyone to sing happy birthday to Richard’s son Frank too.

That night was dinner with friends and then Saturday Night Special time!

Sebastian Roche was filming in town, so he popped in to do some introductions, surprising everyone.

Kim Rhodes did a version of “Shout” that I love.

We also got Briana Buckmaster and Lisa Berry being rockstars – the talent in this cast, I swear!

Jason Manns joined Rob and Billy for the traditional Hallelujah harmonies and audience singalong.

In an awesome shirt.

We also got Richard Speight, Jr. onstage – who also has a show with the Station Breaks coming up in December in Nashville. Don’t miss it!

The band took a long break from singing “She Waits” over the past few years, which was a staple of the early SNS concerts and one of my all time favorites.

They’ve recently gone back to performing it, with Rob saying it has some additional emotional meaning to him now that his dad has passed away. He was emotional performing it, and so were most of us listening.

Louden Swain never ever disappoints – and I’ve seen alot of Saturday Night Specials! I’m so grateful that we have a house band for these cons that is so damn talented. (And also just very nice people).

They also took a break from performing “Medicated”, another of my all time favorites, but it was the encore this time with an actor kazoo chorus.

Sunday morning was a special gold panel – J3! Jared, Jensen and Jeffrey Dean Morgan!

It started without Jeff, as he was still doing some photo ops, so Jared and Jensen gave each other props as usual.

JDM joined shortly after, all smiles.

Jeff had a funny story about coworker Norman Reedus and his epic crush on Jensen.

Jeff: I’ve never seen Norman like really jealous, he wouldn’t stop talking about you. I had to show him a picture of Danneel and say he’s not available!

Jensen: I sat across from him at your wedding and we had really lovely conversation. I’d met him before but it was cool to sit and chat with him, but it was that normal banter

Jeff: Since then, I don’t know if he’d watched Supernatural, but he binged The Boys.

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825203122102235323

Jeff didn’t’ know when he was cast as Kessler on ‘The Boys’ that the character was imaginary.

Jeff: Ever since I saw the very first episode, I wanted to be on The Boys.

They’re all excited about Jared joining the chaos and being on The Boys.

Jensen: You might wanna lay some real boundaries…

Jared: My mom is gonna watch this, so please don’t get me naked, Kripke!

(I had the chance to chat with Jared’s lovely mom later that day. She asked me if I had any new books and I said yes, one on The Boys, but she probably shouldn’t watch it – especially if her son is on it! I’m trying to look out for you, Jared!)

One of the most hilarious moments of the con was when a fan stood up to ask a question, holding a portable fan. Except it did not look like a fan…

JDM: It’s a fan…

Fan: I just had a photo op with Jeff, and I’m still cooling off…

JDM: If you had pulled that out…

Jared: Shhhhh

Jensen: Stop it!

Is there anything better than J3 being dirty? I think not.

(At the Radio Company concert, one of my friends also had one of the interestingly shaped fans, and gotta say, I’m buying one too, I don’t care what the hell it looks like, it was a life saver!)

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825204689358434369

It didn’t end there. Jared mentioned “how the sausage is made”. Jeff and Jensen immediately started giggling.

BOYS.

They talked a little bit about their shows, past and present.

Jensen: I already feel a big responsibility as a lead actor. Jared took on even more as a producer.

Jared talked about how producing really helps you understand the story.

I love how they both care so much about story telling, and are always looking for opportunities to appreciate each other’s professional work.

JDM: Producing is often about lack of money. I’ve been asked to direct, but I hate watching myself.

He went on to amend that.

JDM: If I could direct Jared or Jensen, I would.

A fan asked how much they can lift.

Jensen: This is probably a good question for Jared to answer.

Fan: You’ve been working out too…

Jensen: Again, this is probably a good question for Jared.

Jared: Where’s Clif?

Turned out the fan could deadlift quite a bit too!

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825207678387257499

JDM said he’s starting a new project that he can’t talk about yet, and will be filming the sequel to Postcard Killings too.

Jared: So, Email Killings?

Lol

What’s coming up?

Jared: Jeff is set to direct Season 16 of Supernatural…

JDM: In a heartbeat!

Jared: I have a few things we’re working on developing, but I’m leaving tomorrow for Fire Country.

Jensen and Jeff applauded their friend.

Jared: I’m just doing a couple episodes, not like I’m joining the cast forever. Going up to see our buddy Max and some of our friends and family from Supernatural that I haven’t seen in four years, so I can’t wait to go play in their sandbox.

That makes me so happy.

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825211844942020900

Jared: Kripke is writing something for me, so we’ll see if I can go up and join The Boys, see if I can work it out.

Jensen: Are you doing squats? She is! (pointing to the fan who’s doing the impressive deadlifting)

Jared: She can be my double. Just follow her fan to The Boys…

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825211844942020900

Jensen listed his new projects, including guest spots on Tracker, Season 5 of The Boys, Vought Rising spinoff, and Countdown.

Jared and Jeff (applauding): You’re gonna break Amazon!

That panel was so much fun and over way too soon – JDM often looked like the proud papa.

Jared and Jensen and Jeff hugged on their way out and it made my heart so warm. Winchesters.

I caught a bit of Jake Abel’s panel – I always enjoy listening to Jake. A Winchester too!

Jake said he brought his three year old son to the con.

Jake: When he heard there was a band, he asked “I give them coin?”

Awwww.

He talked a little about the amazing work he did on Supernatural portraying going back and forth between Michael and Adam, which he was able to show that transition even without special effects.

On Sunday we also got “the wee three” panel – Richard Speight Jr., Ruth Connell and Rob Benedict!

Ruth said she had just started watching ‘Felicity’ – aww, supporting Rob.

Richard at some point pitched a new version of Three’s Company. Was it starring them?

Ruth pitched a West Wing sequel casting herself as President and Rob as her arch nemesis. Rob was not amused.

Someone asked, would they have gotten along with their characters?

Rich: I think I would.

I think he’s right!

Rob pondered whether he would, then Ruth weighed in.

Ruth: You’d bicker.

She giggled.

Ruth: And I’m God’s guilty pleasure.

She told a story about her time on Supernatural and sending an email about the Jack the Ripper line for Rowena, because there’s nothing funny about that real life case.

Rich had to tease Rob of course, calling him out for having a moat around his house. (He doesn’t).

They also reminisced about that early epic teasing Richard did about Rob hating Perth, which apparently has really stuck around.

Rob: If you google “Rob hates…” it says Perth!

Rob of course was asked about that scene as Splinter in The Boys. He said that the exercise was to be very vulnerable and to own it, which was what he did.

Rob: I mentally prepared myself for that role. It was a challenge and that’s why I wanted to do it.

Richard talked about being naked in the film Open Water.

Rich: We were naked but we wore a sock. The wardrobe department did a costume fitting where you picked out your size sock.

OMG the challenges of being an actor…

Ruth: I was nude in a play and nobody’s eyes fell out.

Rob: Some people’s did after my scene in The Boys…

Lol

More seriously, Rob did say that he had an intimacy coordinator on The Boys, and he was glad.

That was a great panel and Rob and Ruth are adorable.

We also got another “couple” – the Winchesters, John and Mary (aka Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith).

Jeff: We did two episodes together, what are your questions?

They reminisced about filming Lebanon when JDM got hit in the nuts lol.

Sam: How did that even hit the target?

JDM: Well it’s a large target…

Sam: It was good that happened because we just couldn’t get it together (they were so emotional filming Lebanon).

She said that when they all worked together on Lebanon, it didn’t feel like the first time.

Samantha had some very nice things to say about Jared and Jensen.

Sam: I’d meander away from my mark and the boys would pull me back.

JDM: That’s why I held her hand in Lebanon.

Awwww.

JDM talked about how much time Jared and Jensen spent trying to crack them up on set.

JDM: They also could figure out how to stop and I’d still be in giggle mode, like c’mon you don’t get to pull the rug out from under me now, we’ve got the giggles, this is a team effort. All of a sudden they’re professional because the camera guys were like over it and I’m still heeheehee.

Adorable.

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825273632786170009

Jared and Jensen didn’t prank him though.

JDM: Those boys didn’t prank me, they were too stuck on each other.

Sam: They didn’t prank me either!

Jeff answered a few Walking Dead questions too. He apparently ships Negan and Daryl.

JDM: I still have hopes that Negan and Daryl will get together. We’d be so happy!

They both touched on the fact that their characters are not exactly popular with everyone.

JDM: What do you call people who don’t like John?

Sam: Supernatural fans.

Lol

JDM: I came back and was like, what the fuck happened? He was trying to avenge his wife’s death and now you hate him!

In real life, J3 are probably total trouble together.

JDM: A lot of bad things happen when Jared, Jensen and I hang out together.

I was so so so excited to have Jeff on The Boys. Jeff told the story of how that finally came to be.

JDM: Finally Kripke tweeted something answering a fan’s question of why can’t JDM be on the show, and he said because his schedule sucks and it just can’t work out. And I saw the tweet and was like, yes it can! So we talked and I was in the middle of shooting so they did all my episodes at the end of the shoot and then the directors came back and shot the scenes with me in it. That was very kind of them because that never happens.

He moderated the panel on The Boys at Comic Con, which was awesome even though he felt a bit unprepared for all that he had to read and do.

JDM: it was supposed to be Jensen and me moderating but he wanted his moment.

And he had it!

Jeff is also thinking about next season, as are we all.

JDM: Kripke gave me panel questions, and one was about if I was in a scene with Jensen, so it made me think, well maybe…

Yes please! Jared too!!!!

Back to Supernatural, someone asked what Mary and John would say to Sam and Dean in Heaven?

Sam: Give us the keys back!

One of Jeff’s favorite scenes on The Boys was the big reveal of who Kessler really is. It was a challenge to film those scenes because he kept having to run off camera to hide since Kessler wasn’t really there.

And then it was time for the main event – the J2 panel with Jared and Jensen! The boys leapt onstage as they always do.

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825291202360381727

We even got a Winchester family portrait, something we haven’t had since that long ago Vegas con where Jensen turned into a rockstar for the first time.

Both Jensen and Jared’s parents were at this convention, so they gave them a shout out during the panel. I had a chance to chat with all of them – they are all so sweet and so very proud of their sons. I’m always touched that they come over to say hello and want to know what books I’m working on. I’m so glad they found Family Don’t End With Blood and There’ll Be Peace When You Are Done  moving and inspirational, and were glad their sons had chapters in them.

The boys did a lot of reminiscing during this panel and also had a lot of sweet things to say about each other, something that makes their panels very heartwarming.

Jensen on directing Walker: I was fortunate to come in and direct an episode. And for someone who didn’t have the relationship with the crew like this young man did (pats Jared). I’d only ever directed Supernatural, which was obviously a crew I knew really well. So I knew I had a support team behind me who wouldn’t let me fail. Coming on to a show where I really only knew one guy (pats Jared) – well, I knew some of the cast – but I only really had a relationship with this guy. But I already knew from knowing this man for so long (pats Jared), the tone he would have set where the cast and crew would have been such an incredibly welcoming and embracing environment, and it was nothing short of just that.

I love how when they’re saying something serious about the other, they punctuate it with a pat to the shoulder or knee to make their point. Friendship goals, seriously.

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825292884456689748

Both Jared and Jensen are embarking on lots of exciting new projects – Jared said he would start filming Fire Country that Tuesday!

Jensen said he started filming in 3 weeks for Countdown.

Someone asked about the cars. In fact I think this was the con where someone got up to the mic and asked Jared how it felt NOT to get an Impala – which of course he DID get! Not sure if they meant to be rude or honestly didn’t know. Anyway, as most of us know, both Jared and Jensen got an Impala.

Jensen: I like to say Jared and I saved two of the Babies. The ones we drove the most.

(Hero 1 is Jensen’s and was at this year’s NJ con. Hero 2 is Jared’s “Lil Bro” who was at this very con – making the question even sillier!)

In fact, she was in the vendor room so I was able to visit her and take some pics. Just like Jensen’s baby, she’s so purty!

Jared talked about his love of Dr. Seuss, which I happen to share, so that makes me happy.

I don’t know what prompted him to say this, but…

Jensen: Like Soldier Boy, I like a good vintage…

I will never ever get tired of J2 reminiscing about Supernatural.

Jensen on the iconic gym teacher outfit: I wish I hadn’t worn that. My bright idea was if we were gonna go with a gym teacher, he should probably look… and now that outfit has haunted me ever since I had this stupidly bright idea.

Jared: We have two in the room right now!

Jensen: Yeah that was not scripted, I was like, go with me here, I’ve got an idea. And it was entirely modeled after a coach I had in middle school. I probably shoulda just gone with the sweats.

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825295444240396593

Speaking of iconic outfits, Jared says he still has the white Lucifer suit.

They did get serious sometimes. Jared talked about the importance of seeing people as people, not as things.

Jensen talked about friends being the family you choose.

They of course talked about the Supernatural set and what a fun place it was to be. Jensen talked about setting up some spontaneous pranks and then looking over and seeing Jared loving it. They must have been like the very best kind of feedback loop!

I mean, look at them! It’s no wonder these panels are like pure serotonin to watch.

Of course there are differences between them and their characters.

Jensen: I don’t share the disgusting appetite that Dean – and Jared – have!

Jared looks gloriously unrepentant lol.

Maybe my favorite panel moments were when they talked about what they admire about each other. Thanks to the person asking that question!

Jared: I have to say this in front of him? (Jensen does chin hands expectantly to make Jared laugh). Honestly, where do I start? I’ll say one of the things that has been abundantly obvious to me and I’ve relied on for almost the last 20 years is that he doesn’t give up. He doesn’t give up, not on a project, not on a person, he just goes like all right, one step at a time, let’s do it. Not that he doesn’t get down, we’re all humans, we have good days and bad days, but when the shit hits the fan, I’ve always said he’d be a good Navy SEAL or something, he’s just like okay, what’s next? I can’t change that, so what’re we doing? It’s like didn’t you just hear, the camera broke? The stage is on fire. Okay, well can I get something from tomorrow’s work? He just, he goes.

Awwwww.

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825300214661435871

And Jensen on what he admires about Jared…

Jensen: He’s got a really great head on his shoulder… shoulders. Two just stunningly muscular shoulders. (Jared drops his head, embarrassed as Jensen intended). But he gets an interest in something and he digs in so amazingly, in any subject. If it’s academics, if it’s wanting to know. I’m always like hey Jared, what supplements should I be on, because I know he knows all about it, or hey man what book should I be reading, and he’ll give me like thirteen fourteen recommendations. His brain works in such a brilliant way, I’ve always been in awe of how he’s able to do that and do it consistently. I mean, he doesn’t burn out, he doesn’t tire out, with this zest that he has for wanting to know more about life. And it too is infectious. I wish it was more infectious and I’d be infected with it completely! But I get a little bit of it and it inspires me to want to learn more and know more and have that desire for knowledge the way he does, it’s really really impressive and it’s had an amazing impact on his life and the way that he can relate to so many different things.

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825300441405546607

Awwwww.

I love how they have to diffuse the seriousness a little with some playful teasing both times, but how ultimately they do have so much to say about what they admire about each other.

And of course they acknowledge those lovely sentiments not with words but with a reassuring touch, as always.

Jared, like all of us, is looking forward to Jensen on The Boys next season.

Jared: (acts out his fanboy heart beating, much to Jensen’s amusement)

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825301239589896519

And we’re also really looking forward to Jared on The Boys next season. He shared a bit of conversation he had with Kripke.

Kripke to Jared: You know the Rob scene…

Jared: No, don’t write that for me!!!

Lol

Nothing makes me happier than when Jared and Jensen talk about Sam and Dean and Supernatural.

Jared: I would have loved to see Dean with his nephew.

Jensen: Season 16…

Everyone: YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Someone asked what they miss about playing Sam and Dean. (In their chapters in There’ll Be Peace When You Are Done, this is what they both talk about – it makes me emotional every time I read it).

Jensen: Working with this guy every day.

Jared agreed.

Jensen: It’s easy. Literally. We’d done some projects prior to it, but we’d never done anything to that capacity. We grew so much not just as individuals and men, but as actors. And when you do that with the same person, day in and day out, you develop just a – there’s a (he looks to Jared for the word)

Jared: There’s a cohesion, a synchronicity.

Jensen: A synchronicity to it that’s rare in this industry.

Jared: Yes, and furthermore, a) yes what he said, but… Or yes, b) and, not no but…

Jensen: (turns to find Jared’s mom in the audience)  I don’t know. Sherri? That’s not right is it? You just failed, your mom’s here.

Jared: Especially with the career paths we’ve had, always in the public eye, you can get really concerned whether you realize it or not about how you’re perceived.  Sam and Dean got to do everything, good and bad, public and private. We were asked earlier about writing memoirs. Some people explore through travel, food, friendships. I feel like Jared got to explore a lot through Sam.

https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/1825304231307256180

I still want that memoir. If you haven’t read Jared’s brilliant insightful autobiographical chapter that he wrote in Family Don’t End With Blood, check it out. He’s an amazing writer.

They both look back on their time on Supernatural as something incredibly special.

Jensen: I’ve never laughed as much as I did with this idiot next to me.

Interesting tidbit that shows how much J2 were producers on Supernatural, albeit without the actual title. In the script it was Sam who said the “pudding” thing. Jared and Jensen switched it since it was so much more a Dean thing.

I’m so glad they were there and able to do those sort of things!

Never underestimate the reach of Supernatural either. Apparently Brittany Griner spent some time talking about Supernatural and the Impala when she was incarcerated. It’s helped people get through all sorts of tough times!

All too soon, it was time for the last question – which turned out to be one that’s been asked approximately ten million times. I never get tired of hearing Jared and Jensen’s answer though.

Were they happy with the way Dean died?

Jared: Yes, I am happy with it.

Jensen: Yes, I am happy. I think it had to be him going out doing what he was made to be doing, what he loved to be doing. I also think it needed to be in a way that he could stand up. Getting sick or debilitated in a way that made him fall down or be down or on a death bed or anything like that, I don’t think was as powerful as him standing up and looking at his brother eye to eye.

Jared: And furthermore, though I didn’t write it, I think it was part of the natural justification of the characters. They had done so much, they had killed God and Satan, but at the end of the day, they were human, they were flawed. They killed all the vampires, and zombies and rugarus, so at the end, the reminder that they were human, they were people.

That’s so much of what I love about the ending too. That’s what made Sam and Dean so inspiring to so many people – what made Always Keep Fighting such a powerful mantra. They weren’t superheroes, they were mortal men. But they went up against the most powerful monsters imaginable anyway, and they never gave up. They truly did always keep fighting. That Dean was eventually killed on a hunt, as he always expected to be, makes it so clear the mortal danger they were facing each and every time they went on a hunt. That, to me, makes them incredibly courageous.

They both are happy with the finale and the way Supernatural ended, and very very proud of their performances. As they should be.

Endings are hard; I cried my eyes out watching the finale. But it’s a masterpiece.

Jensen joined Rob to sing the Last Question song, adding that the fan actually asked two questions lol.

That was a great panel to end the con – Jared and Jensen congratulated each other, shared a fistbump, and thanked the fans as they always do, hands over hearts and arms around each other.

That was Sunday night, but for many people, it wasn’t the end of the con as we know it exactly – because the following night was Radio Company’s second live show ever, at Sagebrush.

Stay tuned for more on that crazy night!
