As in, the Creation Entertainment Supernatural convention in Orlando, Florida last month. Happy 21st birthday, Supernatural!
Orlando was a hot con.
And by that I mean, hot as in we were all sweating our butts off – especially Jared and Jensen and all the fans who did J2 Baby ops outside! I did not have the stamina for that, but shout out to the “Baby sitters” and Clif, who were out there much of the weekend remaining unfailingly pleasant and helpful in spite of the heat.
My flight was miraculously on time and I had a chance to meet lots of new people in the vendor room.
If you picked up a copy of one of the books, or just stopped by to tell me that you’d enjoyed reading one in the past, it was great to see you! (If you didn’t, you can find the books with chapters by the Supernatural actors along with our other books on the show and ‘The Boys’ at the links on the home page here).
Friday I got in too late to catch any panels – but I did manage to catch a swim in the hotel pool, which was the perfect way to unwind after flying!
On Saturday, I caught Misha Collins’ panel as I always try to do – he began it with a tackle hug of Rob Benedict, which gave us these priceless happy making moments.
Then we got a surprise Matt Cohen appearance and more tackle hugs and kisses – and a reminder from Misha to watch Matt’s new movie ‘Exes’ on Tubi and Amazon!
If you missed it, my review of ‘Exes’ right here on the Fangasm blog. Check it out!
A fan asked, does Castiel ever influence what Misha says in real life?
Misha: Once the kids got up from the table and left their plates behind, and I said hey, don’t you think you should clear your plates? And my daughter said why should I do that? And I said, because (Cas voice) I’m the one who gripped you tight and raised you from Perdition… My daughter was like oh, that makes sense. And I was like, well, in some ways, that almost sounds a little like Cas. So there’s little things like that…

I seriously enjoy Misha’s hilarious story telling abilities.
He also told a hilarious (and also terrifying) story of being on vacation with the family and confronted by a grizzly bear – like right in his face. He decided to take a picture because of course he did.
Has Misha ever told Jared this story???
Did Misha’s understanding of Cas change over the seasons?
Misha: Yes, in his relationship with Dean.
What Supernatural cast member would Misha choose to work with?
Misha: Baby. Best temperament.
Lol
On the other hand, Misha initially thought maybe he’d like to BE Baby, then thought better of it.
Misha: Particularly because Jared, when we were filming especially in Season 4, Jared was trying to bulk up at that point and eating like 8000 calories of protein a day. There were times the fart gas created so much pressure in the cabin of Baby that our ears popped. So that was coming to mind. Who would you want to play? It’s hard, right? They’re all so deeply flawed. I think of other characters and then I’m like, but Cas was so handsome…
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/2098813743740113338?s=20
While they were all definitely NOT well behaved on Supernatural because it was their show, Misha said that he and Jared and Jensen were all very well behaved on ‘The Boys’.
Misha: We were very well behaved because we were guests in someone else’s house. Even Jensen, who was a regular at that point, had come in late and it was such a big ensemble cast, so he was in some ways also a guest there, but Jared and I in particular. I mean, we did fuck around a bit – we did film a version as Sam, Dean and Cas.

Occasionally Misha does get serious. He said that Supernatural is an experience he will cherish, and one that changed him – and that he will be bonded forever with Jared and Jensen.
Misha: We all had children while we were on the show, got married, got separated, major life changes. We had crew members who were very beloved who passed away, and going through all those things behind the scenes with this group of people formed a bond that will never be broken. We will all be lifelong friends because of it. Cas has this line ‘you changed me’ but we were all very much changed and shaped and molded by our experience on Supernatural behind the scenes.
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/2098816196292354527?s=20
He reminisced about directing Supernatural.
Misha: Jared and Jensen never mess up their lines (except when they were luring Misha in for a pie in the face!)
He said he eventually gave up trying not to laugh after Jared and Jensen made that their mission.
He also did a hilarious imitation of Castiel as a Valley girl confessing to Dean lol.
Cas: OMG my queen, you slay! I really like you and just wanted you to know, it’s like a really big deal for me to say this, because I could like easily get stuck in Purgatory, but you’re like totally amazeballs, so anyways, peace out…

Priceless.
I caught a little bit of the trio panel of Men of Letters alums David Haydn-Jones and Adam Fergus joined by Henry Winchester himself, Gil McKinney.
Misha came over to listen to Adam describe his first experience of reading fanfic with his character and Castiel. I’ll leave it to you to hypothesize about what the rating was…
All three performed in the Creation Broadway event the night before, which I watched on Youtube and WOW, everyone was amazing! Gil said he really loved performing – and he killed it!
Adam: Performing a song from Phantom last night was a dream come true.
On Ketch’s relationship with Dean:
David: Dean was kinda Ketch’s boyfriend, let’s be honest.
On Henry’s relationship with Sam:
Gil: There was a real connection between Henry and Sam.
Adam said that his character really believed in what the Winchesters were trying to do.
David also made a case for Ketch being Rowena’s boy toy in Hell in leather chaps. (Ketch got around, clearly…)
Fanfic again? They all emphasized that we should all tell our own stories.
All three have chapters in either Family Don’t End With Blood or There’ll Be Peace When You Are Done, all about what they hope we take from their characters and what being on Supernatural has meant to them.
David said that at the end, Ketch said “I have to go help my friends”.
David: He grew a heart, only to have it ripped out of him.
That’s Supernatural in a nutshell!
I love having Jim Beaver at a con, and it’s doubly wonderful to have him share the stage with Steven Williams. They are just as entertaining as Rufus and Bobby were onscreen!
Jim: Somebody made me a muppet Bobby.
Steven: Somebody make me one!
Characteristics of good hunters?
Steven: You need to ask the writers!
Jim: Basically invincibility and irascibility.
Steven at one point pondered a question.
Jim: We don’t have all day…
Lol
Jim also has a fascinating chapter in Family Don’t End With Blood, all about acting and celebrity and fame, and his own powerful experience portraying Bobby Singer. He also has a chapter in ‘Supes Ain’t Always Heroes’ about portraying Bobby Singer again – on The Boys!
Alex Calvert is one of my favorite people. He started his panel asking what Florida stereotypes need to be debunked.
Audience: None, they’re all true!
Why did Jack want to emulate Dean?
Alex: To be the cool guy in the room?
He said Jack would go to a football game and be like, why are these guys in tights – and why are they so aggressive?
Lol
Alex really enjoyed playing the role of Rufus in Gen V.
Alex: It was so much fun. As an actor, you wanna play all the colors.
Rufus certainly was a different one!
Alex on Jack: Having 3 dads? Cool!
He feels lucky that the fandom embraced Jack.
Alex: If you hadn’t liked the character, they would’ve killed him off, but thankfully you liked the little idiot!
The Saturday Night Special was as special as always.
We got to hear a lot from the various members of Louden Swain’s solo projects, including Mike Borja’s – with a little help from Kim Rhodes.
Gil McKinney and Briana Buckmaster teamed up to sign a duet of ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”. Definitely worthy of a Broadway performance!
Billy Moran also sang a song from his solo album.
And Rob sang one of my favorites – the song he performed on Supernatural, Fare Thee Well.
The kazoos came out for Medicated – Mark Sheppard’s was mysteriously even BIGGER than last con!
Rob loves conducting the kazoo chorus.
And his joy is absolutely contagious. What a great show!
Sunday was a very emotional day – Supernatural’s 21st birthday! (The show premiered on September 13, 2005).
Jared and Jensen seemed as emotional as we were at the gold panel (once they found out lol).
Jared: I was today years old when I found that out. September 13?
Jensen: Is that today?
Jared: That’s awesome, thank you all, it wouldn’t have happened without you guys.
Jensen: No, it would have – it just wouldn’t have continued without you guys!

What’s a TV show Jared and Jensen would be great on? They both said they’d kick ass on ‘The Amazing Race’ – and I think we all agree!
They did get some complicated questions. Their answer?
Jared and Jensen: Yes.
(Twitter decided I had tweeted too much during the gold panel and throttled most of my tweets, so this coverage is less than usual unfortunately. But it didn’t stop me from taking photos!)
Jared and Jensen credited the fandom with Supernatural’s longevity on its 21st birthday in their main panel too after they did the traditional leap onstage.
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/2099547496821231629?s=20
Jared: I know a lot of you probably think it’s a testament to us, but behind the scenes we know it’s a testament to y’all. Thank you all.
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/2099244829305606428?s=20
Jared has been doing a Supernatural watch with his son, Tom, and is appreciating the show all over again, including his co-star’s acting talent. He complimented Jensen on the emotional scene in ‘Home’ when a desperate Dean calls their dad on the phone.
Jensen confessed that in another scene (the one that made me into a lifelong Supernatural fan, in fact – when Dean tearfully confesses to Sam how devastated he is over their father sacrificing his life for Dean’s) he had just had Lasik surgery and kept tearing up.
Jared: I was like wow, he’s so good!
(It wasn’t just the tears, Jensen, you were amazing in that scene – I literally sat there with my mouth open and said out loud to my daughter, OMG this is the most amazing show ever!)
Someone asked their favorite animal and Jensen saw his chance to bust his friend.
Jensen: Bear!
Jared (slides his chair away)
Jensen: Jared has a fear of bears. Every time someone is like can I get a bear hug, Jared is like ooooof.
Jared: I love hugs – but I hate bears! No, I don’t hate bears, bears are cool, if there are any bears out there, you’re legit, we’re peeps…
Jensen: Dog is the obvious one, he took that one so I’ll give another one, also one of my favorite animals.
Jared: Squirrel!
Jensen: No, not squirrel – though you do like a squirrel…
Jared: I do.
Me: Awwwww
Jensen: I’m gonna go with horse.

They both re-told one of my favorite stories, the Jared fanboying over Eddie Vedder one. Jensen re-enacted escorting Jared away from a rather mystified Eddie (They were at a backyard party and Jared was so overcome he asked Eddie for a drag of his cigarette, promptly coughed and then tried to give it back. Vedder was like uh, that’s okay, you keep it. Danneel and Jensen exchanged a glance and Jensen knew what he was supposed to do, escorting his friend to the car lol)
Like this…
Jared: We’re outside and he’s smoking and I don’t know what to do – I’ve never smoked, but I’m like hey man, is that real? IN my head I was like, is that pot or crack or tobacco, and he’s like yeah and I ‘m like cool, may I? And he’s like, he hands me the cigarette and I grab it and am like (fumbles with it nervously) and I manage to take a puff and cough – it’s tobacco – and I’m so fucking cool, so I hand it back to him and he goes, you can keep it…
Jensen: longsuffering affectionate expression…
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/2099546189016211786?s=20
What did Sam and Dean talk about and do on road trips?
Jensen: There’s another name for that – punch buggy. No, no, it’s slug bug. It’s a bug, a Volkswagen bug.
Audience: Punch buggy.
Jensen: It’s not a buggy! It’s a bug, that’s totally different.
Jared: What did we talk about?
Jensen: I just told you. We punched each other! Slugged each other. There was probably a lot of loud music played, which I think Dean uses to drown out the conversation. I think we even showed that sometimes – sorry I can’t hear you, music’s too loud…
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/2099545431638262180?s=20
Jared: I think a lot of it was about food. Sports?
Jensen: Yeah but this is what Sam and Dean would talk about. I think there was probably a lot of research going on, he’s – Sam’s – probably with a journal, them talking through how they’d handle the case they’re on. So probably a lot of exposition going on that didn’t need to be filmed, which we actually did end up filming a lot of that stuff. I think a lot of music playing, maybe some games being played, and for some reason I feel like we should have filmed this – one of us has to go to the bathroom really bad.
Jared: Oh, the Diet Coke bottle… no, not gonna do it.
Jensen: Anyway, I’m sure we played games.
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/2099250213080670429?s=20
(I love how they lapse into ‘we’ when talking about Sam and Dean, even after all this time)
Jared said he and Tom haven’t gotten to the episode yet where Dean kills Ruby.
Jared to Jensen: So we haven’t seen the episode yet where you kill their mom. We’re gonna have some explaining to do!
There was some reminiscing about on set shenanigans, including the time Jared and Jensen pranked Misha and Alex with Sam and Dean turning in for the night and then loudly moaning offscreen lol.
Jared: There was a sequence where Dean and Sam go to the bedroom to drop our bags off or something, and they’re (Misha and Alex) sitting on the couch and we’re like okay we leave in the morning, whatever, and we go off camera and we start going “oh yeah”, “uhhhh”, moaning and groaning, and they can’t hold their shit together. So the director, Nina Lopez-Corrado, who had done ‘Fresh Blood’ – ‘Red Blood’ – ‘Red Meat’? Something about blood and meat. It was her second episode and she was like okay, that’s a wrap on Jared and Jensen. And he and I are sitting there like hehehe, wait, what? And we’re like but we’re not finished filming and she’s like no, you are. We were like, did we just get kicked off our own set?
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/2099254789641232833?s=20
I can never hear that story too many times, or watch that little bit of bts gag reel!
Jared also told the story of Alex’s first scene and how he pranked him during it. Alex was such a good sport lol. Reenactment:
Maybe the highlight of the panel was when a fan came up to the mic and said she couldn’t ask her original question because her boyfriend ended up being there (and it wouldn’t be appropriate in front of him), so she had to ask her backup question.
Fan: What’s your shoe size?
Jensen: Well, I guess we all know what her original question was….
Jared: In Britain or America, because one is 46 and one is like 13. Okay, as objectively as I can, when Sam wore Pumas, they were size 14 because they were skinny shoes so they were tight, but these are 13.
Jensen: These say 12.
There then followed a lot of hilarity, with Jensen planting his leg on Jared’s so Jared could check his shoe size. And read it out to everyone in every country’s size chart haha.
Jared: They do say 12. But they also say 11, 46, 30 and 44. In Brazil, quarente cuatro…
Jensen took the time to make that sound ridiculously hot and wink at a fan from Brazil while Jared continued to research his shoe size and tell fans “he’s huge in China!”
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/2099544113301393651?s=20
The entire hilarious time culminated with Jensen mock woefully saying his leg had been on Jared’s continually for way too long.
Jared: I like it.
Jensen: Oh I know. He’s holding my leg on his leg. I can’t go anywhere.
Jared: Get your leg off me!
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/2099257659530576085?s=20
All too soon it was time for the last question.
They ended the panel with a 21st birthday celebration for Supernatural, with Misha bringing out a giant “21” and cupcakes and drinks to toast to the show’s anniversary.
Misha: It’s the 21st birthday of the television series Supernatural. So we need to sing a rousing happy birthday – Supernatural is 21, so it’s of legal drinking age!
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/2099263623633735976?s=20
And a lot of chaos of course, including Misha feeding Jared a cupcake and then kissing some of the icing off. Mishalecki for the win!
https://x.com/FangasmSPN/status/2099260243779989812?s=20
Jared and Jensen signed off with an emotional embrace.
I was pretty emotional too. Spent the evening with some good friends and good food poolside under the palm trees and string lights, still feeling all the feelings about my favorite Show being 21 years old.
And really grateful we’re still all here to celebrate!
